Catherine Brewer, (age unspecified, but somewhere between, say, 13 and 15) tries to trick her parents into letting her stay home from school in order to avoid a boring excursion to an old people’s home, called Passing Winds. The attempt fails miserably, and she has to go on the school trip. Once there, she befriends an old Russian woman, Olga Pivovarov (this surname means Brewer in English), who claims to have been incarcerated there against her will.
